Due to the much higher solar irradiance in the Sahara Desert a solar panel placed in Algeria is capable to produce 2 to 3 times more electricity than the same solar panel placed in Germany on a clear sunny day. To power the entire world with solar power an area of 100 x 100 kilometers in Algeria would be sufficient, that's 10.000 square kilometers. Many areas in the rest of the Sahara Desert have even higher values of solar irradiance.

And now I will tell you that you don't really have to go to space to produce even more solar power. The californian start-up "StratoSolar" has developed a concept for terrestrial space based solar power. They want to place solar panels into the stratosphere at an altitude of 20 kilometers or more. The solar panels would be mounted on top of large buoyant platforms filled with hydrogen gas which are tethered to the ground with electric cables. 20 kilometers or more is above the clouds and above the ozone layer. The sky there is always crystal clear, there is no dust, the temperatures are very low which helps to keep the solar panels cool, there is plenty of highly energetic UV radiation and thanks to the much thinner atmosphere the solar irradiance is 2 to 3 times higher. The day-night-cycles are precisely known which would make this kind of solar power perfectly predictable. A solar panel placed 20 kilometers or higher above Germany produces at least the same amount of electricity as a solar panel in Algeria on ground level.

The buoyant platforms would be similar to dirigibles. They would be as high as a dirigible, but square shaped and a couple of kilometers wide and long, and tethered to the ground with electric cables for efficient power transmission. They could be placed everywhere, also offshore in the oceans. Thanks to the higher efficiency in the stratosphere the combined area to power the world would be less than 100 x 100 kilometers. You would probably even miss such a square on a world map, this is how little surface area would be needed with "StratoSolar".

Now increase this area two or three times and then you have so much surplus energy that you can use it to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and turn it into 100% pure solid carbon. Pure solid carbon is an excellent synthetic fuel because unlike hydrogen it can be converted to electrity in a "direct carbon fuel cell" with theoretically 100% efficiency (in reality with 80% to 90%) compared to hydrogen where the theoretical maximum efficiency is around 63% (this has to do with the entropy change during oxidation). And it is obviously much easier to transport and to store. With so much surplus energy one could produce much more solid carbon from atmospheric CO2 then would be needed as fuel. One could therefore create an ever growing stockpile of stored energy and decrease CO2 levels at the same time.

Nice! One consideration: what about debris in space? How "high" should that be to avoid being wasted? Other would be about safety to maintain it (e.g. rocket attacks, cybersecurity), but maybe they are still too far-fetched questions.

Just to make a VERY fundamental point here… The Sun is space based and it sends us solar energy 24/7 to 50% of the world at any one time. A solar farm 200miles square could supply the United States with an excess of solar generated electricity, thus that it could even export the stuff it would be so awash with power. When you look how small a plot of land that is by comparison to the land mass, and the profligacy of American power usage, sticking stuff in space to do what can be achieved far more cheaply and easily on planet Earth makes zero sense. This is just more fluff and nonsense generated by those who want to slow the transition to green electrical power by making it seem like rocket science. Continuing with America as an example, that benighted nation has only just got its first wind farm at sea under way… just one. So wind power still has a huge way to go along with ground based solar generation. There is now a burgeoning industry in supplying and fitting giant battery farms around the world, using very inexpensive and reliable (but heavy) battery technology, which can keep the power flowing during those occasions when none is being generated (like at night). All this is available right now. It is being made and used ,right now. It is cheaper than using coal and oil,, right now. It takes about two years to payback the investment, right now. This technology was being discussed when I was a boy, over 50 years ago. It's so out of date it's pathetic, hearing this drivel from a news source that ought to know better for pities sake!
